IN the great expanses of New York State's beautiful, lush Genessee Valley, steeped in tradition of gunning and the chase, a bold venture in the science of genetics is bringing forth a strain of pointers to add lustre and a measure of fame to that which hunter and jumping horses have won for the community.

As of the current period, history making, has perforce been pretty much restricted to the inspiring performances recorded by the Elhew pointers in major pheasant trials. It might be well to keep in mind, however, that processes in the long range breeding program that produced them are continuing to progress.

Extremely gratifying as winning a title in major field trial competition can be to any owner or handler, the exaltation goes much deeper with Bob Wehle. He appears to view a field trial as something a test tube by which to determine certain qualities achieved by methods and procedures being followed in the creation of an improved strain of pointers in a long range breeding program.

While thrilling performances of the Elhew pointers have been winning international fame in competition, back at the ranch, technicalities in an intensely interesting and, in many respects, quite unique plan in gun dog breeding and animal husbandry are being pursued with signal success.

The Elhew story, as it has been unfolding over the past quarter century, is one of the most intriguing of the pointing breeds to grace the literature of American field sports. The uncounted volumes relating the roles sporting breeds have played in American life since the early Colonists brought their faithful hunting companions to the new land must ever have a most important and distinguished place in the country's history.

A lot of timber has fallen since the days of the hand-swung ax to the powered chainsaw and a lot of water has washed away a lot of mill dams from the time when every hunting dog was called upon to play the dual role of meat dog and protector of the home to the scientific breeding of highly organized specialists exemplified in its most advanced form at Elhew.

Aside from pets of aristocrats commissioned by the Crown to colonial service to collect taxes and govern, refinement in breeding of hunting dogs of the early Colonists was confined to superior qualities of ancestral "brag dogs" handed down by word of mouth. Offsprings of boasted "full bloods" who had distinguished themselves by their feats in trailing and their courage
in combat, were eagerly sought by those in a position to barter for them.

The influence of field trials in the improvement of the northern pheasant dog was most pronounced in New York State where earlier field trials in the 1920s culminated in the organization of the Pheasant Championship Association and the running of the first championship stake.

Ironically, New York State, seat of the National Open Championship since its inception, and venue of the running of the National Amateur Championship many times, had failed to produce a locally bred-and-developed title-winning dog until Elhew Marksman, handled by his breeder, owner and trainer, won the National Amateur title twice―in 1956 and 1958.

Rivaling the beauty of a bench show champion, the style of a Paris model and a master hand in finding and handling game, this twice-crowned Adonis of Pointerdom and the subsequent National Pheasant Shooting Dog Championship won by Elhew Jungle at the age of 31 months, and Elhew Zeus, significant placement before the age of 20 months, thrust the Elhew pointers into the charmed circle of field trial greats. Elhew Huckleberry's victory in the fifth renewal of the National Pheasant Shooting Dog Championship run over the Three Rivers Game Management Area near Baldwinsville this year,
makes it four out of five for the Elhew pointers in this classic event.

To Bob Wehle, the early-age title victories meant much more than the glories attached thereto. For him the victors had been put to the test and had presented irrefutable proof that years of research, study, experimentation and headaches that had gone into the breeding program that produced them, was bearing fruit.

In the 25 years since the plan was set in motion with the mating of Jem of Fearn, imported from the grouse moors of Scotland, with Frank of Sunnylawn, who won fame as one of the country's greatest shooting dogs, operational procedures have necessitated expansion of facilities to where Elhew Kennels has won recognition as the foremost institution of its kind in the country.

Avoiding ornateness, the ultra modern kennels are designed for efficiency in guarding the physical and psychological development of the dogs from maternity care and puppyhood to advanced age.

Three of the kennel buildings, the first of a series of a half dozen that make up the housing facilities, are of brick construction. Located not far from the dwelling house, they are partially screened from view in a setting of fruit and shade trees protecting a portion of the runs from the sun in the warm days of summer. One of them houses recently weaned youngsters, the second, advanced puppies, and the third, trained dogs, including the champions and other winners, and those receiving their "college" education.

Beds in the individual compartments are reached by opening a door in the partition separating the kennel compartments and a commodious corridor. A moving sliding door that forms the head or foot of the bed, makes the cleaning and changes of bedding a simple, quick and easy process.

Enclosures and partitions of the runs, which are of ample size to permit normal exercise, are of heavy gauge, rust-resisting link fencing. Floors of the puppy kennel runs are of finely crushed stone. Floors of the other kennels are of concrete, kept immaculately clean and sanitary by systematic washing.

Two other kennels house older puppies, mostly in their check-cord period of training. Another more commodious, bright and airy building, with large exercise yard attached, located some considerable distance from other buildings, houses ten of Elhew's proved producing matrons. In addition to the ten living in "Ladies" home, Elhew has 20 others available, if and when needed, in carrying out the planned line- and in-breeding program.

Evidence attesting to the thoroughness of a well organized operational system is encountered on every hand. One is impressed that no detail has been overlooked.

A portion of the corridor of the main kennel building is set aside for medical and minor surgical treatment of ailments that do not require professional or veterinary hospital care.

Every dog has its individual food dish identified by name or number. The dishes are stacked in a rack in a dish-washing facility. Cleanliness, sanitation and early attention to even minor injuries or ailments not only serve to keep the dogs in best of condition, but pay off in money saved in veterinary bills, Bob said.

Near the kennel housing four to six month old puppies, Bob released a dozen quail from a small field coop and pen to give a six-month youngster, trailing a check cord, an opportunity to put on a spotting and pointing show that was a delight to see.

Fascinating, yes, but the real you-gotta-see-to-believe surprise came a few minutes later. Parking the jeep fifty feet from the main kennel where the champs are housed, Bob left us, returning moments later with two field trial winners capering on either side.

By what sounded more like a polite request than a command, the two handsome pointers hopped out of the jeep and took positions in front of the jeep. Bob ordered the brace to "heel" for a minute "breather," then sent them on for another mile run at 24 to 28 miles an hour before ordering them aboard for a return to the kennel.

To confirm or disprove his belief that they could mush with the best of them, he entered a team in races at Clayton on the St. Lawrence River, winning third place in competition with top sled dog teams.

Kennel and associated facilities could properly be termed the development portion of a program of research and development at Elhew in step with an era of scientific achievement and progress in every field of human endeavor that challenges imagination.

This should be defined in a detailed standard of perfection as to type and conformation together with a definite level of performance that would include scenting ability, intelligence, disposition and other qualifications that go to make up the composite of the ideal dog.
